The joys of FTPing home || guidelines || help

This is an illustrated help guide for those not familiar with how to FTP. I'm using the program WS_FTP for my example, but most FTP programs work similar to this one.

The log-on screen has blanks to fill in for the host/name address. This can be an IP number, or it can be the actual site name, folcsite.com for example. Put in your user ID and password and hit "OK" and that will launch your connection to the website.

This is the first screen you'll see if you log on successfully. The left-hand screen contains your computer directories. The right-hand screen is the site directory. Double click the "html" folder.

Once you click the "html" folder you enter the part of the site where the sub-directories (dean, teri, gossip, etc.) are located. Pick the directory you need and double click it.

Once you have the directory open, highlight a file from your computer files. With WS_FTP you hit the arrow to load the file from your computer to the website. With other programs you may have to "drag and drop" the file. Either way, make sure you have "binary" checked. All image files are uploaded in binary format.

That's about all there is to it, just hit the "close" button when you're done and that will log you off the site. Then send the URL of the uploaded picture to the person who made the request so he/she can post it to the message board. For example, if you uploaded a picture called "deanduch.jpg" to the site, the URL would be www.folcsite.com/dean/deanduch.jpg

Please, before you upload a picture, look in the directory and  make sure a file by that name does not already exist. If someone sent you a file called dean01.jpg, there could easily be another file with that name. In that case, before uploading, change the file name to dean01a.jpg so that it doesn't overwrite the other file. Lastly, when sending the URL to someone, make sure everything is the exact case as uploaded. The directories are all in lower case, it would be "dean" as the subdirectory, not "Dean", or "DEAN". Also, make sure whether the person used jpg in lower or upper case. Typing JPG instead of jpg, or vice versa, would cause the picture not to post if it doesn't match the exact case of the uploaded file.
